How to pick your One Word!
Ask yourself how do you want to feel?
It can be very general, yet come from a soulful place. You might ask yourself–I want to feel more joy in the everyday or really specific, I want to honor my body. It will probably feel awkward at first . . . maybe even self indulgent.
Take your time and sit in quiet as you discover what you want for yourself, what makes your soul sing, what is your heart song.
Another way to think about it is–what is your Thought Theme?
What kind of person do you want to become? Do you want to lead? Do you want to mentor? Do you want to be more generous, feel peaceful? Gentle? Which words move you into becoming who you are meant to be?
Step 2 1/2:
Determine how LONG you will stick with your word.
When I started this I pick one word for a year. My best year was when I chose the word INTENTIONAL. Honestly, it took me about 3 months before I could really get a handle on what being intentional was in relation to my life. Being intentional with my kids, the food I ate, the money I spent. It was hard and it took a tremendous amount of focus.
The next year, I picked two words Loving and Kindness. I bounced back between the two words until I was able to approach every situation with loving kindness. Note: I didn’t always stay with loving kindness–I’m human and a Mom with 4 kids–I totally lose it sometimes. BUT having a focus gave me a guidepost or direction.
Pick your word? It sounds so simple, but it is so insanely daunting! No worries.
I asked my online friends at Tribe Writers, led by Jeff Goins, what their one words are–I’m sharing them now!
Bring it on!
Did you find that helpful?
